Madden first started what would later grow into his first full-length novel, Slow Boil Rising, in 2002. Two short stories, "The Trial of Reginald Bowperson" and "A Well Organized Protest" formed the backbone of the fictional universe for Slow Boil Rising and the dystopian world it occupies in the year 0039.

The stories grew while Madden attended law school at Washington University in St. Louis and needed a distraction and a release from the often tortured, pretzel logic of the law. By early 2009, Slow Boil Rising was a 40,000-word manuscript. There it stayed for years – six years, to be exact.

Since that time, Madden’s pecked away at his keyboard from time to time, working on a Slow Boil Rising sequel and a prequel involving a seditious seismologist fittingly called Seismic Sedition. He’s also working on another prequel to be named later and a standalone novel. He aims to release all of these by the close of the century.

His wife deserves a sainthood for tolerating his prolonged periods of clacking away on the keyboard in his basement office.
